Mohammed Shami – Fastest Indian to take 100 ODI wickets
Had India and Pakistan not faced
the impediment of division in 1947, the gathered Indian soil could have had
more pace bowlers in its kitty. Indian cricket team, no doubt is and has been
one of the best cricket team in the world and is a tough competitor. Indian
soil has produced few greatest cricketers such as Dilip Sardesai, Mansoor Ali
Khan Pataudi, Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev (first Indian all-rounder), Sachin
Ramesh Tendulkar, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Virat Kohli to name a few. However so
far as the pace bowling is concerned, India has never been that fortunate as
Cricket Australia and Pakistan cricket team who hold the best pace bowling
attack of all times.
In my view what matters most in
game of cricket is consistency in performance. A cricketer can be called
dependable and consistent when he plays his natural game of cricket in almost
all the games he plays, against all the bowlers and in all the conditions
whether favorable or not. One such batsman in Indian cricket has been Rahul
Dravid aka “The wall”. In the area of pace bowling attack, consistency consists
of wicket taking ability of a bowler thru constant Speed, line, length, pace
variation and seam being the most critical factors.
Though India could not steadily
produce the pace attack of over 150 kph all the times but has been blessed to
have few good fast pace bowlers in its squad from time to time, namely,
Mohammad Nissar, Kapil Dev, Javagal Srinath, Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sahrma,
Mohammad Shami to name a few.
A less acclaimed pace bowler of
India during current times, Mohammad Shami, has set a new record of being the
fastest Indian bowler to have claimed 100 ODI wickets. Mohd. Shami is right arm
reverse swing specialist bowler with an average speed of 140 kph. Shami attained
this feat in his 56th ODI game against New Zealand in January 2019 by
sending Martin Guptill back to the pavilion. Followed by Shami to achieve this
mark are Irfan Pathan (59 matches), Zaheer Khan (65 matches), Ajit Agarkar (67
matches) and Javagal Srinath (68 matches).
This achievement of Mohammad
Shami is remarkable for few reasons. No doubt, he played lesser number of
matches than any other player to enter this hall of fame but at the same time
one thing pertinent to mention here is that he has not been regularly retained
in Indian Cricket Team to play continuously in all the series which Indian Team
plays at home or at abroad. Also he has recently struggled a lot in his
personal life which shatters the morale of any player but Mohd. Shami shown his
grit and gumption to come out of any hurdle and be the best and the fastest.
